Description:
On the occasion of International Vulture Awareness Day, observed on 7th September 2024, TCF organised a community-driven awareness program in Gularghatti, a region known for its frequent vulture sightings at the Corbett National Park. The event was conducted with the active participation of the Van Gujjars, a nomadic pastoralist community that relies heavily on livestock for their livelihood. Given their close interaction with nature, the program aimed to highlight the critical ecological role vultures play in maintaining environmental balance. Through a series of educational presentations and discussions, the event sought to raise awareness about the declining vulture population, its cultural significance, the threats it faces, and the urgent need for conservation efforts. The awareness programme commenced with a detailed presentation on vulture characteristics, emphasising their crucial role as scavengers in maintaining ecological balance by consuming dead animals and preventing disease outbreaks. Participants were also educated about the cultural significance of vultures in Indian mythology, particularly through the stories of Jatayu from the Ramayana, fostering a deeper connection with these birds. A discussion followed on the current status of vulture populations in India, highlighting the alarming decline over recent decades. The programme then addressed the primary threats to vultures, focusing on the veterinary drug diclofenac, which is toxic to vultures when they consume treated carcasses. The introduction of meloxicam as a safer alternative was well-received, reinforcing the need for sustainable practices in livestock management. Finally, the programme underscored the importance of vultures in disease prevention, explaining how their role in consuming carcasses helps control diseases like rabies and anthrax.
