Vulture Count in Kaski and Tanahun District

Start Date: September 6, 2025
Start Time: 07:30
End Date: September 6, 2025
End Time: 09:30
Location: Pokhara, Nepal
Organisation: Pokhara Bird Society
Description:
The Pokhara Bird Society, along with bird enthusiasts, students, and conservationists, will conduct a synchronized vulture observation and counting program in six locations across the Pokhara Valley (Kaski District) and three locations in the Tanahun District. The count will take place at the same time from all observation points to ensure accuracy and avoid duplication of records. Observers will note the species, number of individuals, time, and behavior, supported by binoculars, scopes, and cameras. A standard data sheet will be used to record essential details such as location, GPS coordinates, weather conditions, and vulture activities like feeding, nesting, or roosting. At the same time, the team will promote the use of the Wing Watchers mobile application—developed for vulture observation—to record sightings in real time, encouraging participants and local communities to continue monitoring year-round. The event will also serve as an awareness campaign, where team members will share knowledge about the ecological importance of vultures, threats such as diclofenac poisoning and habitat loss, and the need for community participation in conservation. This initiative is expected to provide reliable population estimates, increase local engagement, and strengthen long-term monitoring efforts for vulture conservation in Nepal.
